Bhutan's Hot Stone Bath: How to Enjoy a Traditional Menchu Soak

Bhutan's Hot Stone Bath: How to Enjoy a Traditional Menchu Soak

What to expect from Bhutan's hot stone bath and when to add one to your trip

After a day of climbing to cliffside monasteries and wandering through dzongs, there is one Bhutanese tradition that many travellers end up talking about long after they fly home: the hot stone bath, known locally as "menchu". It is simple, a little rustic, and wonderfully relaxing. Here is what to expect and how to fit one into your trip with Welcome Travels.

What is a hot stone bath?

A Bhutanese hot stone bath is a soak in a wooden tub filled with fresh river water. The water is often infused with Artemisia leaves, a fragrant herb valued for its medicinal qualities. River stones are roasted over an open fire until they glow red, then dropped into a separate chamber connected to the tub. As they hiss and crack, the stones release heat and minerals into the water, slowly turning a cold tub into a soothing, steaming bath.

How it works, step by step

  • Preparation: River water is mixed with Artemisia leaves to create the medicinal "menchu".
  • Heating: Stones are heated until red-hot and placed in the connected chamber, so they never touch you directly and there is no risk of burns.
  • Infusion: The heat and minerals from the stones gradually warm the bath, creating a soothing, therapeutic soak.
  • Time to relax: Most people stay in for one to two hours, often sipping a hot drink. Some follow it with a salt scrub to exfoliate and an oil massage to ease tired muscles.
  • </ul>If the water starts to cool, just ask the attendant to add another stone. If it gets too hot, they can hold back for a while. It is your bath, so take it at your own pace.

    Why travellers love it

The hot stone bath is traditionally enjoyed to relieve stress, improve circulation and ease aching joints. Whatever your reason, it is a perfect way to unwind after a long hike or a full day of sightseeing. Many travellers enjoy it with a view over the Paro Valley, which makes the experience even more memorable.

The best moment to book one

The most popular time for a hot stone bath is the afternoon or evening after the hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest Monastery. The walk takes about two to three hours uphill, and a long, warm soak afterwards is the ideal reward for tired legs.

That is why the hot stone bath already appears in our itineraries:

    • Classic Bhutan Experience (7 nights / 8 days): an optional hot stone bath in Paro after returning from Tiger's Nest.
