Buddha Dordenma: Visiting Thimphu's Great Buddha Statue

Visit Thimphu's 54-metre Buddha Dordenma on your Welcome Travels trip.

High above the southern edge of Thimphu, a golden Buddha looks out over the valley. The Buddha Dordenma Statue is one of the most striking sights on any first visit to Bhutan's capital, and it appears on every Welcome Travels Classic and Short Escape itinerary. Here is what makes the statue special, and how to enjoy your stop without rushing.

A landmark overlooking Thimphu

Perched on a hill at Kuenselphodrang, the Buddha Dordenma is one of the largest sitting Buddha statues in the world. It rises about 54 metres, bronze and gilded in gold, and is both a place of devotion and a modern architectural landmark. From the terrace you look across Thimphu valley; on a clear day the view alone is worth the short drive up from town.

Inside the statue, more than 125,000 smaller Buddha figures are housed, each about 10 to 12 inches tall. The main figure was built in sections in China and assembled in Bhutan, which helps explain the scale you see from the road below.

Our places of interest page lists a modest entry fee for the site. Dress respectfully, as you would for any sacred place in Bhutan: covered shoulders and knees, and a quiet manner around people who have come to pray.

Where it fits on your Welcome Travels trip

Buddha Dordenma is linked to all four of our published Bhutan tours:

  • Classic Bhutan Experience (7 Nights / 8 Days) — on the Thimphu day, alongside Tashichho Dzong and a choice of Zorig Chusum or the Textile Museum, with options such as the Motithang Takin Preserve and the Wangditse Monastery hike.
  • Classic Bhutan Experience – Short Escape (4 Nights / 5 Days) — among the Thimphu places of interest, often paired with the Handicrafts Market and Clock Tower Square.
  • Swing Into The Hearts Of Bhutan golf tours (both the 7 Nights / 8 Days programme and the Short Escape) — the Great Buddha is among the Thimphu cultural stops woven around the golf days.
  • </ul>Because every Welcome Travels trip is private, we can linger for photographs, combine the statue with the nearby viewpoint, or keep the stop short if you prefer more time at a dzong or market. Tell us what matters most when you inquire.

    Tips for a better visit

    • Light: morning and late afternoon are kinder for photos of the gold surface and the valley below.
    • Combine nearby stops: the Wangditse hike offers glimpses of the Buddha from the forest trail, and Tashichho Dzong sits in the same capital day on most Classic itineraries.
    • Pace: the approach is a short walk from the parking area; take it slowly if you are still adjusting to the altitude after landing in Paro.
    • With family: the open plaza is easy for children compared with longer monastery climbs such as the Tiger's Nest.
