Exploring Thimphu: A Practical Guide to Bhutan's Capital

Exploring Thimphu: A Practical Guide to Bhutan's Capital

Where to go in Bhutan's capital, from Tashichho Dzong to Buddha Dordenma

Bhutan's capital, Thimphu, is where most Welcome Travels trips really begin. After landing at Paro, our guests usually drive about an hour and a half to the capital, and the city's mix of ancient fortresses, busy shops and quiet hillside temples sets the tone for the rest of the journey. Here is a practical guide to the places we love to show visitors in Thimphu.

Start at the National Memorial Chorten

In the heart of the city on Doeboom Lam stands the National Memorial Chorten. Built in 1974, it honours the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, known as the Father of Modern Bhutan. From early morning until evening, elderly residents walk clockwise around the white chorten, spinning prayer wheels and quietly reciting mantras. Joining the circuit for a few rounds is one of the gentlest ways to feel the rhythm of daily life in Bhutan.

Tashichho Dzong, seat of government and faith

On the western bank of the Wang Chhu river, Tashichho Dzong is both a Buddhist monastery and the administrative centre of the nation. It houses the King's Throne Room, key government offices and the headquarters of the Central Monastic Body, and its courtyard hosts the annual Thimphu Tshechu festival. Its origins go back to 1216, and it was expanded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the 1600s. Visiting hours are limited, so your guide will time the visit for you, and modest clothing is required: long sleeves, long trousers or skirts, and covered shoulders. It is especially beautiful at dusk, when the whitewashed walls and golden roofs are lit up against the darkening valley.

Buddha Dordenma, watching over the valley

High on a hill above the city sits the Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world at 54 metres tall. Made of bronze and gilded in gold, it houses more than 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside. The platform around it gives wide views over the Thimphu valley, so it is worth bringing your camera.

Meet the takin

At the Motithang Takin Preserve, a short drive from the city centre, you can see Bhutan's national animal in a semi-natural pine forest habitat. The takin is a large, sturdy and rather unusual-looking animal. The preserve began as a small zoo, but when the takins were released, they preferred to stay nearby, so the area became a protected preserve instead.

A gentle hike to Wangditse

If you would like some fresh air before sightseeing, the trail to Wangditse Monastery is one of Thimphu's most family-friendly walks. It winds through pine forest, apple orchards and village houses, with clearings that look out over Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong and the valley below.

Living crafts and a riverside park

The National Institute for Zorig Chusum preserves Bhutan's thirteen traditional arts, from thangka painting and wood carving to weaving, embroidery and bronze casting. Watching students at work is a rare look at skills passed down for generations. For a slower hour, Chang Yul Park offers riverside promenades, a rose garden and walking tracks along the Wang Chhu.

Evenings around Clock Tower Square

Clock Tower Square, with its carved and painted tower decorated with golden dragons, is surrounded by shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants. It is a relaxed place for an evening stroll, a look at local handicrafts and your first taste of Bhutanese food.

How Thimphu fits into a Welcome Travels trip

All of our current tours include time in Thimphu. On the Classic Bhutan Experience (7 Nights / 8 Days), for example, you spend three nights in the capital: an evening stroll around Clock Tower Square on arrival, a day with the Wangditse hike, the Takin Preserve, Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong and Zorig Chusum, and a cultural day with a presentation on Gross National Happiness, traditional dance, archery and khuru (darts), and an authentic Bhutanese lunch. Shorter trips, including the 4 Nights / 5 Days Short Escape and our golf tours, also stop in Thimphu.
