Hiking to the Tiger's Nest: A Practical Guide to Paro Taktsang

Hiking to the Tiger's Nest: A Practical Guide to Paro Taktsang

How to plan the Tiger's Nest hike in Paro, with tips and tours.

Perched on a cliff at 3,120 metres above the upper Paro Valley, Taktsang Palphug Monastery, better known as Paro Taktsang or the Tiger's Nest, is the image most people picture when they think of Bhutan. It is one of the country's most revered spiritual sites, and reaching it on foot is a highlight of almost every trip we plan. Here is what to expect and how to make the most of the day.

Why the Tiger's Nest is special

The monastery's dramatic setting is a big part of its magic. Clinging to a sheer rock face and surrounded by towering mountains and green valleys, it can only be reached by steep, winding mountain trails. That effort is part of the experience: the slow climb gives you time to settle into the quiet, and arriving at the temples feels earned. Paro itself is often called the heart of Bhutan. It is home to the country's only international airport, so most visitors begin and end their journey here, which makes the hike a natural part of a Bhutan itinerary.

How long does the hike take?

In our itineraries, the climb up to Taktsang takes about 2 to 3 hours uphill, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos. We usually plan an early morning start. The air is cooler, the light on the cliff is beautiful, and you have time to explore the monastery's temples, courtyards and sacred caves without rushing before heading back down to Paro for lunch.

    • Take it slow. The trail is steep and you are at altitude. A steady pace with regular breaks is far more enjoyable than racing to the top.
    • Wear proper shoes. Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots with good grip make a real difference on the dusty and sometimes uneven path.
    • Dress in layers. Mornings can be cool and you will warm up quickly while climbing. A light jacket you can tie around your waist is ideal.
    • Dress respectfully for the temples. Covered shoulders and knees are expected inside sacred sites, so plan an outfit that works for both the trail and the monastery.
    • Carry water and a small snack, plus sunscreen and a hat for the sunny stretches.
    • Follow your guide inside. Photography is not allowed in many temple interiors, and your guide will explain the customs and stories of each shrine.
    • Plan an easy afternoon. A hot stone bath in Paro after the hike is one of the best ways to soothe tired legs, and several of our itineraries build it in.

The Tiger's Nest is challenging but very achievable for most travellers who take their time. If you have concerns about fitness or altitude, tell us when you inquire. We can suggest a pace that suits you, add a rest day before the hike, or plan a visit to the base viewpoint instead so you still see this extraordinary site.
