A day-by-day look at our private 8-day Classic Bhutan Experience.
Bhutan rewards travellers who slow down. Our Classic Bhutan Experience is a private 7-night, 8-day journey that moves from the capital to quiet valleys, river fortresses and finally the cliffside Tiger's Nest. Here is what each part of the trip feels like, so you can picture your first week in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
Your guide and driver meet you at Paro International Airport, then it is about a 1.5-hour scenic drive to Thimphu, with a stop at the iron bridge of Tamchog Lhakhang. The first evening is gentle: a stroll around Clock Tower Square and the local market.
Day two starts with a short morning hike to Wangditse Monastery, then a visit to the Motithang Takin Preserve to meet Bhutan's national animal. You will also see Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong and either the Institute for Zorig Chusum, where students learn traditional arts and crafts, or the Textile Museum.
Day three is all about culture. You will hear a presentation on Gross National Happiness, watch traditional dance, try archery and khuru (a Bhutanese dart game), dress in Bhutanese attire and sit down to an authentic Bhutanese lunch. The evening is free for shopping.
The road climbs to Dochula Pass, known for its 108 chortens and, on clear days, Himalayan views. You then descend into Phobjikha Valley, home to the black-necked cranes, visit Gangtey Monastery and walk the Gangtey Nature Trail. Expect fresh air, open meadows and very little traffic.
A two-hour drive brings you to Punakha. Walk across one of Bhutan's longest suspension bridges, explore Punakha Dzong, often called the country's most beautiful fortress, and take a countryside walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility.
After the drive back to Paro, you have an easy afternoon around town and a visit to Namgay Artisanal Brewery. Day seven is the one most visitors remember: an early-morning hike up to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, clinging to the cliff above the valley. Start early, go at your own pace and take water.
If a full week is not possible, the Classic Bhutan Experience – Short Escape covers highlights in 4 nights and 5 days. Golfers can look at Swing Into The Hearts Of Bhutan, which combines golf and culture in either 8-day or 5-day versions.
Every Welcome Travels trip is fully private, with no group tours. Packages include Bhutan visa fees, a licensed English-speaking guide (other language guides available), a private driver and vehicle, meals unless noted, 3-star hotels with upgrades available, daily bottled water, and taxes, service charges and the Sustainable Development Fee. International airfare, travel insurance, alcohol, tips and personal expenses are not included.
A few practical notes: trips are confirmed within about two weeks of the down payment (longer in peak seasons), and dietary needs or allergies should be shared at least 7 days ahead. When visiting dzongs, men wear a ceremonial scarf and long socks, and your guide will help with the details.
