Perched atop a hill overlooking the Thimphu valley, the
Buddha Dordenma Statue is one of the largest sitting Buddha statues
in the world. Towering at 54 meters, the golden structure is both
a spiritual icon and an architectural marvel.
Construction: A Marvel of Engineering
Constructed piece by piece in China and later assembled in Bhutan,
the statue is made of bronze and gilded in gold. Inside, it houses
over 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, ranging from 10โ12 inches in
height, each crafted with care.

Tachogang Lhakhang

โA sacred temple inspired by a divine vision of the celestial horse Balaha.โ
Tachogang, also known as Tachog Lhakhang, translates to
โTemple of the Hill of the Excellent Horse.โ This revered temple was founded by the
legendary Tibetan saint and engineer Thangtong Gyalpo (1385โ1464).
According to legend, while meditating at this very site, he envisioned the celestial horse
Balahaโan emanation of the compassionate deity Chenrezig Avalokiteshvaraโwhich
led to the establishment of this spiritual sanctuary.
National Memorial Chorten
๐ National Memorial Chorten โ A Symbol of Devotion & Modern Legacy
The National Memorial Chorten, located in the heart of Thimphu on Doeboom Lam, is one of Bhutanโs most iconic landmarks. Built in 1974, it honors the Third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, known as the Father of Modern Bhutan.

Clock Tower
Clock Tower Square is a square in Thimphu, Bhutan, and is the site of the famous tower with four clock faces. There are also many shops, hotels and restaurants surrounding the square.
The Clock-tower has a typical Bhutanese architectural outlook with rich Bhutanese carvings and paintings. There are traditional hand crafted dragons with golden paintings on all four faces of the tower which symbolizes the county as an independent dragon kingdom. The tower has beautiful paintings and carvings of flowers which add more magnificence to the tower. The shops, restaurants and hotels in the clock tower square have a blend of fine traditional and modern architectural Bhutanese design with multi-coloured wood frontages, small arched windows, and sloping roofs
Wangditse Monastery
The Wangditse hike is one of the most accessible and family-friendly hikes in Thimphu, making it a great choice even for children.
The trail begins on the outskirts of the city and winds gently through fragrant pine forests, apple orchards, and local village housesโan experience that kids often find exciting. As you continue, the path leads into groves of oak, pine, and rhododendron, with occasional clearings that offer stunning glimpses of the Buddha Dordenma statue, Tashichho Dzong, and the Thimphu valley below.
After about an hour to an hour and a half, youโll reach the serene Wangditse Temple. From here, you can either retrace your steps back to the starting point or continue downhill to Dechenphodrang Monastery, where young monks undergo their monastic education. A visit here offers the chance to interact with the monks and gain insight into their daily lives.
Takin Preserve
The Motithang Takin Preserve sits on a quiet hilltop overlooking Thimphu valley, just 5 km from the city center and located below the popular Sangaygang Viewpoint. It is home to Bhutanโs national animalโthe Takin, a rare and unique species found in the Eastern Himalayas.
Originally established as a small zoo, the area was later transformed into a preserve when it was discovered that the takins, even when released, preferred to remain in the area rather than roam the wild forests. Today, it provides visitors with a rare opportunity to observe these gentle creatures in a semi-natural habitat while ensuring their protection.
The preserve is set within a large expanse of pine forest, offering the takins plenty of space to move freely. Visitors enter through a marked gate and signboard, followed by a short 5โ10 minute uphill walk. Along the way, youโll find an admission counter and a small shop displaying Bhutanese handicrafts and brochures.
The takin itself is a fascinating animalโlarge, sturdy, and unlike any other. There are four recognized subspecies: the Mishmi Takin, the Golden Takin, the Tibetan Takin, and the Bhutan Takin. The latter is Bhutanโs pride and a symbol of the countryโs deep connection with its natural heritage.
The National Institute for Zorig Chusum
The National Institute for Zorig Chusum, located in Thimphu and Trashiyangtse, was established by the Royal Government of Bhutan in 1971 with the noble aim of preserving and promoting Bhutanโs traditional arts and crafts in a modern context.
The term Zorig Chusum literally translates to โThirteen Craftsโ, representing the foundation of Bhutanโs artistic and cultural heritage. At the institute, students undergo years of rigorous training in these crafts, ensuring the continuity of skills passed down for generations.

Dochula Pass
Perched at an altitude of 3,100 meters, Dochula Pass is one of Bhutanโs most scenic and spiritually significant landmarks, located on the road between Thimphu and Punakha. The pass offers sweeping views of the snow-clad Himalayas, including the mighty Gangkar Puensum, the worldโs highest unclimbed mountain.
Dochula is more than just a viewpointโit is a place where history, spirituality, and natural beauty converge. The pass commemorates the bravery of Bhutanโs fourth king, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and the Bhutanese soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 2003 military operations against Assamese insurgents. Following the victory, the King returned to Thimphu on 28 December 2003, leaving behind a legacy of courage and national pride.
The 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens
At the heart of Dochula Pass stand the 108 memorial chortens, known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens, built under the initiative of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. These chortens are a profound tribute to the fallen soldiers and symbolize peace, harmony, and resilience.

Gangteng Monastery
Perched high in the serene Phobjikha Valley of Wangdue Phodrang, Gangteng Monasteryโalso known as Gangtey Gonpaโis one of the most significant Nyingmapa monasteries in Bhutan. It is the principal seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition, one of the countryโs most revered spiritual lineages.
Founded in the early 17th century, the monastery fulfills the prophecy of the great 15th-century treasure revealer (terton) Pema Lingpa, who foretold the establishment of a seat for his teachings in this valley. Today, Gangteng Gonpa remains a living center of Nyingma practice and learning, housing monks dedicated to preserving this profound spiritual tradition.

Punakha Dzong
Regarded as the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan, Punakha Dzong stands majestically at the confluence of the Mo Chhu (Mother River) and Pho Chhu (Father River). In spring, when the lilac-hued jacaranda trees bloom, their blossoms drape the towering whitewashed walls in vibrant color, adding to the dzongโs breathtaking charm.
Built in 1637โ1638, Punakha Dzong was the second dzong constructed in Bhutan and served as the capital and seat of government until the mid-1950s. It is also of immense historical importance as the site where all of Bhutanโs kings have been crowned. To this day, it remains the winter residence of the central monastic body (Dratshang), led by the Je Khenpo, Bhutanโs Chief Abbot.
A Sacred Prophecy
The dzongโs location was foretold by Guru Rinpoche, who prophesied that a person named Namgyal would build a fortress at a hill resembling an elephant. When Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan, arrived in Punakha, he chose the tip of the elephantโs trunkโthe very spot where the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers meetโas the foundation of Punakha Dzong.

Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility, is one of Bhutanโs most revered pilgrimage sites, especially for couples longing to have children. People from across the worldโJapan, Europe, the United States, and beyondโhave journeyed here to seek its unique blessings.
The fertility blessing is performed by the presiding lama, who taps visitors gently on the head with a 10-inch wooden and ivory phallus, followed by the bow and arrow once used by Drukpa Kunley, the Divine Madman.
